Completion metrics result in inconsistent readiness

In high-stakes therapeutic areas such as epilepsy and rare disease, field teams need to both recall information and confidently apply complex clinical and product knowledge in customer conversations.

At UCB, traditional training approaches during new hire onboarding relied heavily on end-of-course knowledge checks and completion-based evaluations. While these methods confirmed participation, they fell short in one critical area: they did not provide visibility into whether learners could actually apply knowledge in the field.

KEY CHALLENGES

  • Limited insight into real-time knowledge gaps
  • Difficulty adjusting to training during live sessions
  • Reliant on completion metrics for post-training evaluation
  • Inconsistent knowledge across new hires

“We could confirm completion, but we didn’t always have a clear picture of how well learners could apply the knowledge or where they might struggle.”
Rachel Diaz de Valdes, Learning Manager at UCB Pharmaceuticals

A dynamic, data-driven learning approach

UCB implemented Qstream to embed formative, scenario-based microlearning directly into their four-to-five-day training program. Rather than treating assessments as a final checkpoint, Qstream was used continuously to confirm knowledge and guide facilitation in real time.

Using Qstream’s powerful analytics, they introduced a new level of precision to their training. As live sessions progressed, performance data revealed clear patterns where learners struggled and needed additional support. Instead of relying on assumptions or addressing gaps later, these real-time insights empowered facilitators to pause, revisit those topics and tailor their coaching to individual needs before moving forward.

“We can identify gaps mid-training and adjust immediately, before learners ever get into the field.”
Rachel Diaz de Valdes, Learning Manager at UCB Pharmaceuticals

Driving engagement through transparency

UCB introduced Qstream microlearning by clearly communicating its value to new hires, emphasizing how these assessments support long-term learning, create coaching opportunities and provide benefits to both the learners and trainers.

This transparency helped learners to better understand the intent, leading to higher engagement throughout the training experience.

Learners valued receiving immediate feedback during training, with many surprised at how much they already knew, while gaining clarity on areas for development.

“Learners actually appreciate the feedback. It helps them correct early and realize what they do know.”
Rachel Diaz de Valdes, Learning Manager at UCB Pharmaceuticals

The impact of Qstream at UCB

By validating knowledge through real performance metrics instead of measuring training completion, UCB achieved the fundamental shift they were looking for.

KEY OUTCOMES

  • Stronger field readiness upon completion of onboarding
  • Reduced variability in knowledge application
  • Increased learner confidence
  • More effective training delivery with data-driven insights

The future of UCB Pharmaceuticals and Qstream

UCB demonstrated a nontraditional, but highly effective approach by creating a seamless, frictionless blend between live instruction and Qstream microlearning.

Building on this success, UCB plans to continue evolving its use of Qstream by expanding into ongoing learning and refreshers, developing more personalized learning journeys and exploring innovations such as Qstream’s AI-powered content creator and video-based microlearning activity. As their training strategy advances, one principle remains constant: readiness is not something to assume; it is something to validate.
